Father and son, Roy and Dan S., were concerned about their
health. Roy, 58, had high blood pressure, diabetes and high
cholesterol. At nearly 314 pounds, weight was also an issue
and his knees and joints were showing the strain. Just 29,
Dan saw his weight creeping up (229 pounds), along with a
cholesterol reading at an alarming 268. With focus, determination
and a trip to The Rice Diet Program the two found a way to
turnaround their unhealthy habits.
In just one month's time, Roy lost 39 pounds and lowered his blood sugar from
191 to 103. His blood pressure went from 140/78 to 114/72 and his cholesterol
from 236 to 170 - all with decreased medication. His knee and joint pain and
leg edema also reduced dramatically. In addition to the 33 pounds he lost, Dan's
cholesterol plummeted from 268 to 136. His blood pressure, never an issue, went
down to an enviable 108/64.

His blood pressure went from 140/78 to 114/72 and his cholesterol from 236 to 171 - all with decreased medication. His knee and joint pain and leg edema also reduced dramatically. The duo was enthusiastic about the experience and was encouraged by the entire staff, including the doctors, support people and nutritionists. "Everyone goes out of his or her way to help in any way they can," asserts Roy. "Your job is to take the help they offer and make it work for you by working the program." And these two made it work!
Of course The Rice Diet is about more than just eating well. Dan and Roy spurred each other on as they enjoyed water aerobics, walked and worked out daily during their month long stays. The classes and experiences taught them about naturally nutritious foods, preparation and portion control. They participated in Yoga classes and came to appreciate the mental and physical value of the discipline. Roy found the stretching and conditioning of Yoga particularly helpful as he prepared to resume more strenuous exercise.
Roy and Dan admit they were hungry for the first few days as they adjusted to wholesome food in proper portions. They have high praise for Chef JR's skill in the kitchen. "I can't say enough good things about JR," notes Dan. "He is so creative and works absolute wonders within the strict limits of the diet." Roy laughs and continues, "I looked forward with great anticipation to the stuffed Portobello mushrooms which are permitted on Phase 2 of the diet. But by the time I was allowed them, the menu changed! I did, however get to enjoy JR's version of crab-cakes, and they are really good." That’s high praise from a Maryland native!
Do they have any advice for potential "Ricers"? Dan says, "I think it is a matter of taking the time and making the effort to be mindful of the choices made on a daily basis." Roy concludes, "It is never too late to change unhealthy habits!"
Now back home, both father and son are working to incorporate what they learned at The Rice House into their daily routines. They have promised to spend an hour each day "taking care" of themselves, including a half-hour of exercise and attention to dietary concerns. "Coming back to The Rice Diet is like having a booster-shot," notes Roy, "and we hope to return to keep ourselves motivated."
Roy, a widower, has three other sons: Shane, Rocco and Bob. Dan is in Information Technology and Roy in printing. We congratulate them and we wish them continued success!
