1. What made you decide to attend the Rice House?

In January 2003, I had an office visit with my cardiologist. My cardiologist STRONGLY advised me to attend the Rice House because my health was in very bad condition. I, in turn, STRONGLY said that I was not able to go to the Rice House. Not knowing but my cardiologist called my son who lives in New Jersey. Not long afterwards, I received a telephone call from my son who asked if I wanted to go to the Rice House. The next thing I knew I WAS at the Rice House.

2. Was it what you expected?

Not knowing what to expect at the Rice House I had no expectations. BUT the experience I had will remain with me for the rest of my life including new found health and how to DEAL, COPE, AND HANDLE MY LIFE ACCORDINGLY!

3. How long before you felt great?

I cannot exactly tell when I actually began to feel great. To my memory (maybe) almost immediately, because knowing that I was in a place where I was going to get well was half the battle won. Although, at the time I really did not realize how sick I was OR how much work, time and effort to achieve the goal to get well were needed.

4. How long did you stay initially?

I began the program April 1, 2003 and stayed until (I believe) March 1, 2003.

5. How much did you lose?

Very difficult for me to say, because I am not exactly sure, but I am sure it was well over 70 + pounds. WOW!!!!!

6. Were your medications affected?

WERE THEY EVER!!!!!!!!!!!

I was taking 2 diabetic pills a day (gone then and still gone as of February 11, 2005). I was taking 4 high blood pressure pills a day (gone then and still gone as of February 11, 2005). My cholesterol medicine will have to stay the same seeing that I picked the wrong family. Everyone in my family has genetic cholesterol so with that said I probably will have to stay on cholesterol medication for the rest of my life.

7. What do you do when you are at home to stay successful?

I don’t bring the forbidden foods into the house. The only things in my house are things that can be EATEN WITHOUT PUTTING MY HEALTH IN JEOPARDY AND THERE ARE NO NO NO NO TEMPTATIONS OF ANY KIND. I keep fruit (fresh/frozen), vegetables (fresh/frozen) and many other food items that can be eaten with no GUILT and still stay focused.

8. How do you remain focused?

I think of the consequences. For example, if I don’t stay focused then I will have to return to the medicines that I disliked so much that were trying to make me well, but, also, making me feel so badly. Another very big influence I have is my Mother. She is 91 and watches herself very carefully. She STILL works out (three times a week at Duke University), eats no meat, no fat, only very healthy types of food.

9. Any general comments/thoughts?

I would like to mention at this time what a life-saving place the Rice House was/is. I have learned so much by being there. One of the most important things that I discovered is that LIFE IS WORTH LIVING and we should not take chances or risks with our life. What I also discovered is that food is not the answer to ANY PROBLEM OR SITUATION. Eating what is healthy for you is not as hard as one imagines. What you need to do is put your priorities in place, which is life/health first, and then everything else falls into place.
